Progressive revelation provides an artwork which addresses the “psychology of place”. It assumes that the underpass is not a place where people will pause or congregate and instead sets about to create a sense of movement through the underpass. Based upon the light reflections off ripples in nearby Wolli Creek a gentle, sensory, optimistic experience is delivered.
The composition of the suspended sculpture and its associated “floating” light form is based upon the phenomena of edge lighting. This optical effect is induced by simple physics. Light travels in straight lines and any obstruction in that path will be illuminated. Here, the concealed rear light source invisibly illuminates the laser carved leading edge of the polycarbonate blades.
